Sri Lanka’s president-elect Anura Dissanayake has received congratulatory messages from leaders and envoys since his election victory.

“Sri Lanka holds a special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR,” India’s Prime Minister Narenda Modi said.

“I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our multifaceted cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region.”

India’s envoy to Sri Lanka also met Dissanayake after his election.

The Indian High Commissioner, Santos Jha, met with President-elect Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the National People’s Power office in Battaramulla this evening.

Jha extended greetings from India’s leadership and congratulated Dissanayake on his electoral victory, emphasizing India’s commitment to strengthening ties for the prosperity of both nations, the High Commissioner stated in a post on ‘X’.

This meeting followed Dissanayake’s announcement as president by the Election Commission chairman.

National People’s Power (NPP) presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been elected as the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

The election commission formally announced on Sunday (September 22) NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election.

The commission said on its website that Mr. Dissanayake, 55, won the presidency with 42.31% of the vote at Saturday’s (September 21) election, pushing opposition leader Sajith Premadasa to second place and incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe to a distant third.

Mr. Dissanayake is due to be sworn in on Monday (September 23), according to unconfirmed repors.

In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) after the release of results concluded, Dissanayake said:

“The dream we have nurtured for centuries is finally coming true. This achievement is not the result of any single person’s work, but the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of you. Your commitment has brought us this far, and for that, I am deeply grateful. This victory belongs to all of us.

“Our journey here has been paved by the sacrifices of so many who gave their sweat, tears, and even their lives for this cause. Their sacrifices are not forgotten. We hold the scepter of their hopes and struggles, knowing the responsibility it carries. The millions of eyes filled with hope and expectation push us forward, and together, we stand ready to rewrite Sri Lankan history.

“This dream can only be realized with a fresh start. The unity of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and all Sri Lankans is the bedrock of this new beginning. The New Renaissance we seek will rise from this shared strength and vision.

“Let us join hands and shape this future together!,” he said.

The Air Force has beefed up security at the Katunayake airport since yesterday (21) evening.

It is a grim reminder of how it acted to prevent civilians from gathering near the airport to stop politicians from fleeing the country during ‘Aragalaya’.

However, several politicians have already left the country.

They include former minister Susantha Punchinilame, who departed for Chennai on board Air India flight AI-272 at 2.25 pm yesterday.

UNP’s former general secretary Palitha Range Bandara boarded Bangkok-bound FD-141 of Thai Air Asia at 11.15 pm.

Ittekande Saddatissa Thera left in Cathey-Pacific’s CX-610 flight at 12.50 am today for Hong Kong.

SLPP presidential candidate Namal Rajapaksa’s wife Limini Winoja Weerasinghe and her father Thilakasiri Weerasinghe are due to depart for France tomorrow.

Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles says that the islandwide curfew imposed until 6.00 a.m. this morning has been extended until 12 noon today (September 22).

Curfew had initially been imposed with effect from 10.00 p.m. last (21) until 06.00 a.m. tomorrow (22).

This decision has been taken by the incumbent President Ranil Wickramasinghe under the provisions of the Public Security Ordinance, in view of the releasing of the results of 2024 presidential election tonight.

However, the Police Media Division had stated that although the post-election situation in the country is very peaceful, this curfew was imposed for further safety of the public. Furthermore, Sri Lanka Police urged the general public to stay in their houses during the curfew period.

Meanwhile, the officials engaged in election related duties during the curfew period are allowed to use their ID cards or authorized documents as curfew permits, police said issuing a special notice.

Furthermore, persons traveling to or from the airport for the purpose of traveling overseas or arriving the island from a foreign country, will be allowed to use their air tickets as curfew permits.

In addition, the employees of the institutions that run essential services are permitted to use their official ID card or a suitable document while arrangements should be made to submit the required documents to confirm the identity of the relevant person to the police.

Sri Lanka Police later announced that police stations will not be issuing curfew passes for travel during the curfew period. Issuing a release, the Police Media Division said that essential workers and emergency services personnel can use their official identity cards as a curfew pass.
