The US Navy ship USS Canberra (LCS 30) arrived at the Port of Colombo today (26) for its second visit to Sri Lanka this year, as part of a routine port call.
According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship previously visited Colombo in June 2026.
The Embassy stated that the visit highlights the longstanding partnership between the US and Sri Lankan navies and their shared commitment to strengthening maritime security across the Indo-Pacific region.
Commenting on the visit, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer appreciated the support extended by the Sri Lanka Navy.
“We appreciate the Sri Lanka Navy’s professionalism and support in making these visits smooth and efficient. Each visit reinforces the strength of our naval partnership, built on trust, and our shared commitment to maintaining security and stability across the Indian Ocean,” he said.
USS Canberra is an Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship built in Mobile, Alabama, and designed for operations in both coastal waters and the open ocean.
Equipped with advanced technology and adaptable mission systems, the vessel is capable of conducting maritime security operations, countering sea mines and supporting US naval operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
The ship was named in honour of HMAS Canberra, an Australian warship lost during World War II while fighting alongside US forces in the Battle of Savo Island in 1942.
USS Canberra also made history on July 22, 2023, becoming the first US Navy warship to be commissioned in an allied country, during a ceremony held at the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet Base East in Sydney.
