Sri Lanka political parties to mark International Workers’ Day amid struggles

Sri Lanka’s political parties, trade unions and people’s groups have organized marches and rallies to mark the International Workers’ Day, also called May Day, amidst the political and economic crises in the country.

Political parties have decided to hold the May Day celebrations in a different light this year in the face of the economic, political and social crises that had engulfed the country.

The May Day rally organized by the Trade Union Confederation affiliated to the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will be held at 2pm at the Ananda Samarakoon Open-Air Theater in Nugegoda under the theme ‘ජනවරම සුරකිමු, අභියෝග ජයගමු’.

The SLPP said the May Day will be celebrated with the participation of a limited number of representatives of local government bodies and trade unions, taking into account the economic situation in the country, including the fuel crisis.

The May Day celebrations of the main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will be held at Independence Square. The protest march ‘Samagi Bala Walk’ commenced from Kandy on the 26th will end at the Campbell Park today and from there the people will march to the Independence Square to hold the “May Rally of the Century of the Freedom Struggle”.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has decided to celebrate May Day in four major cities of the country this year. Accordingly, May Day demonstrations and rallies have been organized in Colombo, Matara, Anuradhapura and Jaffna on May 01.

The May Day demonstration and rally in Jaffna will be held on May 1 at 10 am, while the May Day rallies in Colombo, Matara and Anuradhapura will be held at 3 pm on the same day. It is the first time that the party will hold four May Day demonstrations and rallies across the country on the same day.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) May Day rally will be held at 10am at the SLFP headquarters on Darley Road under the leadership of SLFP Chairman former President Maithripala Sirisena.

Leader of the United National Party (UNP) former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will address the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya May Day meeting at 11am at New Town Hall today. The UNP youth front will join protesters at Galle Face.

The combined May Day rally of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, the Democratic Left Front, the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and the All Ceylon United Trade Union Alliance is scheduled to begin at 2 pm near De Mel Grounds, Slave Island. The May Day rally jointly organized by the leftist parties and organizations will commence at 3 pm at Hyde Park.

The Deputy Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) Jayantha Samaraweera stated that arrangements have been made to hold its May Day celebrations at Ape Gama premises in Battaramulla.

SJB says they will not fall for corrupt arrangements

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya rally was organized at Independence Square.

It was worked off under the theme ‘නිදහසේ අරගලය’ under the patronage of Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.

Speaking at the rally Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said they will not fall for the traps set up by the government.

He recalled that the government was trying to garner the Oppositions support in the form of corrupt arrangements such as offering high posts.

MP Premadasa said the government is only focused on retaining power at a time when people are suffering due to shortages of food and medicine.

Responding to threats directed at the Opposition Leader over declining the invitation to form an all party government, the MP said he will hand over his post if the people request it.

MP Premadasa claimed that they will only form a government if it is free of corruption and if they have the peoples blessing.

Speaking at the rally Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara said people must look at history and fight for their rights, like our ancestors did.

Also speaking at the rally MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and the SJB will work for the betterment of the public.

US embassy issues demonstration alert in Colombo

The US Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a “demonstration alert” ahead of the city-wide protests that were held in Colombo.

Several demonstrations and marches were planned in and around Colombo yesterday (1) to protest the economic situation in the country and to commemorate International Labour Day.

“The demonstrations are likely to make travel to/from/within Colombo more difficult and cause road closures and traffic congestion throughout the day,” the US Embassy said.

Sri Lanka is facing one of the worst economic woes since gaining independence in 1948. It is grappling with food and electricity shortages, affecting many people, forcing the country to seek help from its neighbours.

The recession is attributed to foreign exchange shortages caused by a clampdown on tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has left the country unable to buy enough fuel, with people facing an acute scarcity of food and basic necessities, heating fuel, and gas.

Tamil Nadu passes resolution seeking Centre’s permission to send aid to Sri Lanka

To assist Sri Lanka amid the ongoing economic crisis, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution piloted by Chief Minister MK Stalin seeking permission from India’s Ministry of External Affairs to supply rice and essential medicines to the island country.

The state unit of the BJP has welcomed the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu assembly and also the help being provided by the people of Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka.

The resolution was unanimously passed by the house, including the opposition AIADMK and the BJP.

Interestingly, apart from extending support to the government’s resolution, Deputy Leader of the Opposition AIADMK O Panneerselvam also pledged Indian rupees 50 lakh in his personal capacity, to be extended as an aid to Sri Lankan Tamils.

The chief minister, in the Assembly, underscored that Tamil Nadu has not received any official communication on its earlier requests seeking the Centre’s nod to send the supplies.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai thanked the Tamil Nadu chief Minister by saying, “The Central Government had followed the ‘Neighbourhood First policy’ to cement bonds with its neighbours. It is ready to walk that extra mile to help Sri Lanka out of the current crisis, well before the resolution in the Tamil Nadu assembly was passed. We are hopeful that the Government of Tamil Nadu will now hand over the aid package as in the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu to the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure smooth passage to Sri Lanka without insisting on delivering it directly politicising the standard protocols.”

The State BJP chief further mentioned in his official communique, “Despite being in power and a position of command, they put no effort into rescuing the Tamil people from the war zone. Our concern is that this resolution passed yesterday should not be another record ‘2-hour fast-type situation’ orchestrated to create a mirage that the DMK worked hard for ensuring ceasefire during the Civil War in Sri Lanka.”

Highlighting the discrepancies in the resolution, the Tamil Nadu BJP chief said, “It was rather unfortunate that the resolution passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly did not have the information about what the Centre has already provided to Sri Lanka and is providing.”

On April 30, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai began his four-day visit to Sri Lanka. During his visit, he will meet Tamil leaders, and NGOs and will also take part in the May Day celebrations organised by the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC).

This visit is crucial given the importance of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue in Tamil Nadu politics. Mr Annamalai would submit a report of his visit to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda.

This visit by the BJP chief comes after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to grant permission to send food, essential goods and lifesaving medicines to the people of Sri Lanka.

CWC’s 15-year relationship with Rajapaksas ends today – Jeewan Thondaman

The general secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) Jeewan Thondaman says that the party’s 15-year relationship with the Rajapaksas ends today.

The former state minister made this statement while addressing the CWC’s May Day rally today (01).

He said that there is no need for him to hold office in the present government which has caused so much suffering to the people.

The MP further stated that the Ceylon Workers’ Congress has decided to withdraw its support to the government due to this.

He added: “When any government comes to power, we are always given the Ministry of Estate Infrastructure or the Ministry of Livestock. Can’t we be the Minister of Education? Is the Ministry of Defense not suitable for us? Why can’t we be the Prime Minister of this country?”

“Today, some politicians in our estate areas ask what positions we will be given if we support the formation of a government. They work looking for positions. The Ceylon Workers’ Congress is not a party that works for positions.”

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K. Annamalai, who arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday for a four-day visit, had also participated in the May Day celebrations organized by the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC).

IMF says any loan to Sri Lanka requires debt sustainability – Reuters

The International Monetary Fund said discussions with Sri Lanka on a potential IMF loan program are at an early stage and any deal would require “adequate assurances” that the island country’s debts can be put on a sustainable path.

In a statement emailed to Reuters, IMF Sri Lanka Mission Chief Masahiro Nozaki said that IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva discussed lending options and policy plans with a Sri Lankan delegation on Tuesday.

“An IMF-supported program should be designed to resolve Sri Lanka’s acute balance of payments problems and put the economy back on a sustainable growth path as early as possible,” Nozaki said.

The statement came after protests in response to shortages of fuel and other essentials turned deadly on Tuesday and Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister formally asked the Fund for a Rapid Financing Instrument loan for countries needing urgent balance-of-payments support.

Nozaki said the IMF is “very concerned about the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka and hardships suffered by the people, especially the poor and vulnerable.”

But he noted that IMF staff had determined last month in an annual economic review that Sri Lanka’s public debt was unsustainable, and the country needs to take steps to restore debt sustainability prior to any IMF lending, including the emergency Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI).

Such restoration of debt sustainability typically requires a restructuring or reprofiling of public debts, which in Sri Lanka’s case would require cooperation from China, one of its largest bilateral creditors.

The IMF used the low-conditionality RFI loans extensively to assist countries during the COVID-19 pandemic and has provided such loans to ease balance of payments problems after natural disasters, conflicts and commodity price shocks.

“These considerations would need to be examined for a potential RFI for Sri Lanka, once adequate assurances are obtained that debt sustainability will be resolved,” Nozaki said.

He added that the specific design of a Sri Lanka IMF loan, including program targets and conditionality, would be agreed through extensive discussions between the government and IMF staff.

“The discussions are still at an early stage,” Nozaki said.

Hand country over to Tamil leaders – TELO Leader

“To change and uplift the current situation of the country, give the ruling power to Tamil leaders and Tamil parties for one year,” Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation(TELO), Leader MP Selvam Adaikalanathan said.

He said that they will provide equal services to the public without division as Tamil and Sinhala communities. For years Sinhala leaders have been ruling the country. However, with the current situation in the country, we urge everyone including the Sinhala community to support us by electing us to change the current situation in the country.

“The Tamil community did not elect President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President of the country as they were aware that he cannot rule the country properly. Further, the Tamil-speaking people in the country are severely affected due to the ruling power of the President, as they have failed to pay attention to the concerns of the Tamil community in the country,” he said.

Further, he added that the people who will come into power in future should assure that they will provide justice for the lives of missing persons and people who have been arrested for a long period without charge under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Meanwhile, the Tamil National Alliance and all other Tamil parties who represent the Tamil community in Parliament should think about the state of the country and sign the No-Confidence Motion against the Government and impeaching the President.

Mahanayaka Theros sound warning to Sri Lanka’s political leaders

Sri Lanka’s top Buddhist clergy called Mahanayakes on Wednesday called upon the President, Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader and all Members of Parliament to implement the proposals put forward by them on April 4, to resolve the present crisis in the country.

Issuing a joint statement, the Chief Prelates also warned that a “Sangha Convention” would be convened if the political leadership fails to act on the proposals.

The statement contains four key proposals that should be implemented by the entire political mechanism. The statement expressed regret over the failure of the government and the politicians to pay due attention to the proposals submitted by the Mahanayake Theras.

The joint statement is signed by Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thero of the Malwathu Chapter, Most Ven. Dr. Warakagoda Dhammasiddi Sri Gnanarathabidhana Mahanayake Thero of the Siyamopali Maha Nikaya – Asgiriya Chapter, Most Ven. Dodampahala Chandrasiri Maha Nayaka Thero of Sri Kelayanivasa, Amarapura Maha Nikaya and Maha Nayaka Thero of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya, Most Ven. Makulewe Wimalaabhidana Thero.

The Mahanayake Theras said that as responsible citizens, determination to act without falling prey to conspiratorial machinery at this crucial juncture is an essential requirement for the country’s sovereignty and security.

The April 4 statement said: “As Mahanayaka Thera’s we are deeply saddened by the difficulties faced by the entire population of the country today due to the rising cost of living. People are suffering due to the difficulty in obtaining essential food items and medicines as well as fuel, electricity and domestic gas. As preached by the Buddha it is the duty and responsibility of the government to work for public safety by fulfilling the basic needs of the people based on the “Dasa Raja Dharmaya”.

“Therefore, we strongly believe that it is the duty of the government to avoid all unnecessary expenditure, unnecessary ministerial privileges to alleviate the economic pressure on the people at this time of trouble and to provide the necessary relief to the people expeditiously in order to fulfill the basic needs and ensure public welfare”.

The Mahanayaka Thera’s further said that they believe this massive economic crisis can only be resolved through the proper management of public finances, the elimination of corruption, the implementation of development projects based on public needs and the building of a more appropriate domestic economic model for the country based on sustainable national policies.

“The unbearable rise in the cost of living has led to the creation of unprecedented socio-economic crises in the country. In the Kutadanta Sutta it is emphasized that when the basic needs are not met, the citizen is naturally tempted to commit various unjust acts such as theft, kidnapping, corruption, fraud and murder.”

“As insensitive decision-making on public grievances exacerbates public unrest, the government must seek to win the trust of the people by intelligently understanding the aspirations of the people about the nature of the crisis, flexibly seeking expert advice, and finding solutions through a proper mechanism acceptable to the public”.

The Mahanayaka Theras further said that if such measures are not taken it will lead to new crises.

“Therefore, we believe that patience and intelligence are needed to find solutions to the various problems that have arisen in the country. We have a proud history as a proud nation that has been united and resolute in resolving various crises in the country. A case in point is the service rendered by Sri Lankans who sacrificed even their salaries to save the people from the recent global corona epidemic,” the Mahanayake Thera’s said.

UN, UK condemn violence, call for an independent investigation in to the Rambukkana killing

The UN and the UK envoys in Sri Lankan condemned the violence at Rambukkana, where the police fatally shot an unarmed protester during a protest by the residents over the recent fuel price hike and shortage of fuel.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy in a Twitter message expressing deep concern over the violence said the violence by any party involved hinders the rights of all peaceful protestors.

“Deeply concerned by reports of harm to protestors in #Rambukkana. Violence by any party involved hinders the rights of all peaceful protestors. Restricting use of force to the minimum extent necessary is vital to protect citizens and their right to exercise fundamental freedoms,” she said.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner Sarah Hulton condemning the violence in all forms called for retrain and an independent and transparent investigation into the shooting.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life in protests in Rambukkana. An independent and transparent investigation is essential. I condemn violence in all forms and call for restraint. The right to peaceful protest must be protected.”
